Scarlet Citadel for 5th Edition

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Dare You Descend into the Sorcerous Gloom?

Once a fortress where wizards honed their eldritch craft, the Scarlet Citadel now holds a sinister reputation—and for good reason. The dungeon’s well-trod stairs have seen few return from their journeys below. Now, malevolent creatures spin shadowy webs, enchant foul magics, and summon forth dark gods. But for those brave enough, ancient treasures and secrets still lie scattered everywhere. Inside the 210 pages of the Scarlet Citadel, you’ll find:

  • A classic-style adventure for 10 levels of play, fully compatible with the 5th Edition of the world’s oldest roleplaying game.
  • Evocative combats and magical mysteries brimming with plots and subplots.
  • Tons of original traps and new monsters, from clacker beetles to the dire owl bear!
  • An isometric map and complete write-up of the nearby town of Redtower, where the adventurers can set up a home base.
  • An adventure easily paired with the Scarlet Citadel Map Folio, a fold-out set of playable battle maps from Kobold Press.
  • Plus much more!

Grab your torches and enter the depths—great riches and great adventure await you!

Took a group through the whole thing, using the roll20 package and purposefully not doing any prep ahead of time. Here's some thoughts.

The Good:
- Good value/excellent content for the money
- Roll20 package was an awesome time-saver. Ran a 6-month campaign with basically zero prep
- Great variety to the monsters - kobold monsters are less "balanced" than standard 5e, but really fresh, and generally fun

The Bad:
- very generic/poor story. Probably intentional, but the lack of "through-line" kept it from being more memorable
- many times the passages between the passages between the maps were confusing
- lack of magic weapons with a high number of monsters with physical resistances felt punishing after awhile
- a couple encounters did not play out in a fun way; to be expected.

Overall this is a superior product, and one i would especially recommend to the time-strapped DM, or one that lacks fluency with roll20....See more

I bought this as a PDF to use a beer and pretzels game. The maps require overlay maps and the overlays are not provided with the PDF. The module seems quite playable but as I read the PDF it's annoying to not be able to review the overlay when it's referenced. Quotes like" The Portico. The portico shown on the overlay is the best way to get down to Level 5 and the Black River. The portico and stairs reside in the parallel reality; they don’t even exist in Midgard. Only characters under the effect of potions of augmented reality can use these stairs to move between Levels 4 and 5. A character without the potion can’t be guided along by someone else because the passage doesn’t exist for them. They slam into the cavern wall while their companion walks through the doorway and down the steps. The steps descend to Area 512." are really annoying when the GM also cannot see this semi-visible stairway :(

Does this tie in with the Midgard campaign or can I use it with any generic fantasy (say, Forgotten Realms)? How much of the story and plot is Midgard-specific?

What other books do GMs need to run the Scarlet Citadel? (Tome of Beasts? Midgard?)

This looks truly great BUT there are zero VTT / JPG files of the maps provided and the ones inside the pdf are already labelled :/.

Hey Badger, thanks for the feedback! The VTT support is directly in the VTT packages from Roll20, Fantasy Grounds, Shard Tabletop, and the player-friendly VTT Map Pack at the Kobold Press Store. Tons of support!

Wolfgang, thank you very much for the direct reply.

I sent the item back for a refund. I cant afford to buy the item here and then buy the item again on a VTT sorry dude. I only get so much money to play with monthly.

I do love what you guys do though.

I purchased this at the Kobold Press site. The book is fan-freaking-tastic. I expected it to be good (I'm a huge Midgard 5e fanboy) but this one exceeded my expectations.

One caveat: The maps in the book are great but if you want standalone VTT maps, they a separate purchase ($19) and are pretty low res. The VTT output is just pointlessly expensive for what you get.

We highly recommend buying the Roll20, Fantasy Grounds, or Shard Tabletop VTT packages directly. Those maps are all at the resolution recommended for each platform, with tokens and stats all prepopulated.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
